MAKING NEW FRIENDS AT ANY AGE

Getting together over a cup of coffee. Eating dinner together. Sharing a few laughs. There’s nothing better than socializing with friends. Friends can be the next best thing to family — some even become like family. And, interacting with friends is very good for your health. Socializing can be especially good for seniors — and studies prove it.

Good for your health

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that staying socially active helps keep loneliness and depression at bay. Hanging out with friends can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, can lower blood pressure and may help maintain memory and cognitive function.

Making new friends is also good for one’s health. According to a recent study, “…older adults who interacted with people beyond their usual social circle of family and close friends were more likely to have higher levels of physical activity, greater positive moods and fewer negative feelings.” (The Journals of Gerontology, Series B: Psychological Sciences and Social Science, February 20, 2019.) The reason may be simple — interacting with more people and making new friends encourages each of us to be more physically and socially active, to do more and expect more from each day.
