MAKING THE MOST OF THE HOLIDAYS

Are you recently widowed? Or dealing with the stress of COVID-19 like everyone else? The holidays are just around the corner, and while you may be feeling more alone, there are many things you can do to find joy this holiday season and make the most of the holidays at Summit Pointe.

Focus on gratitude

The “Sisterhood of Widows” suggests you start a gratitude journal — jotting down notes on what you have to be thankful for.  Your grandkids ….. a good friend …. a sunny day. Even though things may seem more gloomy during this unprecedented year, there’s always something that can bring great joy to your heart. Take a look at everything you’re fortunate to have and all the people you love. Jot it down in your “little black book,” and refer to the journal whenever you need a little pick-me-up.

Don’t stress about gifts

Then there’s the question of gifts — what are you going to buy? Who has the time or energy to shop? Think about gift cards this year. Here’s how you can make them personal. Your son likes working with his hands? Get him a gift card to a home supply store. Your granddaughter loves dressing up? Buy one to a clothing store. Yet where do you find gift cards? Many are sold at your supermarket. Most can be found online — just visit GiftCards.com.

Eat, drink and be merry

Don’t want to cook this year? Have your family bring over their favorite dishes. Better yet, give them your recipes and have them whip them up and bring them over. And even if you don’t eat together as a family, you can eat at the same time in your own homes and talk over the phone. AARP has posted lots of ideas on how to enjoy a virtual holiday with your family.

Stay in touch

Try to remember that this too shall pass. In the meantime, be sure to stay in touch with friends and loved ones. Call on the phone, FaceTime, write a letter, communicate! It’s all about staying in touch, and living, loving and laughing during these challenging times. Let’s make the most of the holidays at Summit Pointe.
